This is a personal story written by our founder and Team Leader, Julie Cliff.
Running a business can feel like an exciting adventure, filled with moments of triumph and clarity. However, there are times when embracing change can feel daunting as if you’re navigating a winding path covered in fog—where you can’t see what lies ahead, and the only option is to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Recently, at Space and Time, I found myself at a crossroads. We needed to make some significant changes to our approach—something that wasn’t easy, especially given how much we care about our clients. But these changes were necessary for the long-term health of the business and my personal well-being. Sometimes, the most challenging decisions bring the greatest clarity in embracing change.
Adjusting to Change: A Necessary Step
Making adjustments to our services, particularly our work with specific clients, felt like a loss at first. But in reality, it marked the start of something more balanced. Growth often means recognising what is sustainable, both for myself and my team. There’s real strength in knowing when it’s time to let go of something that no longer works, even when it feels like a big shift.
In business, as in life, it’s crucial to embrace change—even when it feels uncertain. Understanding what needs to evolve is key to creating a more sustainable future, and often, it brings unexpected rewards.
Finding Clarity in the Present
I want to share this journey because I know I’m not alone. Recently, there have been days where I could only focus on the next immediate step, unable to see beyond the present moment. It’s easy to get lost in the bigger picture and feel overwhelmed by everything that needs to be done. But sometimes, all you can do is tackle what’s right in front of you—and that’s perfectly okay. Practicing mindfulness can enhance your ability to stay present. Explore the power of mindfulness in business and how it can help during challenging times.
For me, staying in the present became my survival tool. On difficult days, I gave myself permission to just breathe, take that next step, and keep moving. Sometimes that meant completing a single task, making a small decision, or simply showing up. It wasn’t grand or ambitious, but it was exactly what I needed.
Celebrating Small Wins While Embracing Change
Whether you’re a business owner, caregiver, parent, or someone who’s struggling to see beyond today, know that it’s okay to focus on the small wins. Some days, just getting through is an achievement in itself. Life is full of overwhelming challenges, and during those times, staying grounded in the present moment can be the key to finding your way forward.
Moving Forward Through Uncertainty
Embracing change is difficult, and facing uncertainty is even harder. But one thing I’ve learned from my years running Space and Time is that the fog doesn’t last forever. Even when the path ahead is hidden, continuing to put one foot in front of the other eventually leads to clarity. The fog lifts, and you find yourself still on the right path, moving forward.
So, to those of you feeling overwhelmed or unsure right now: you don’t need to have it all figured out today. Sometimes, just getting through the day is enough. Taking care of yourself along the way is a victory worth celebrating.
If you’re also navigating changes or feeling stuck, I’d love to hear your story. Sharing the ups and downs with others can make all the difference.
