How to Tackle Doom Boxes and Break the Habit of Stashing and Dashing

doom boxes

Let’s talk about how to tackle doom boxes. You know the ones—those overflowing boxes or bags full of who-knows-what that you meant to sort through… months ago. They’re often shoved in cupboards, corners, or even under the bed, out of sight but never quite out of mind. Doom boxes can feel like a mystery and a burden—but you’re definitely not the only one with a few hanging around.

In our recent online workshop Tackling Doom Boxes: How to Break the Habit of Stashing and Dashing,” we had an honest, practical chat about why doom boxes form, what they’re really costing us, and most importantly, how to get rid of them without overwhelm.

What Is a Doom Box—and Why Do They Happen?

A doom box is any temporary container that becomes a long-term clutter trap. Maybe you tossed random things into it during a quick tidy-up before guests arrived—or maybe it’s been sitting there since you moved house.

They often come from:

  • Emotional attachments (“I might need this one day”)
  • Lack of time (“I’ll deal with it later”)
  • No clear storage systems
  • Or just plain decision fatigue

But here’s the thing: when we leave doom boxes unchecked, they become mental clutter too. Each unsorted box is a silent to-do list in your brain. No wonder it’s exhausting.

How to Tackle Doom Boxes (Without Burning Out)

In the workshop, there’s a 6-step Space and Time Organising System—a method we’ve used for years with clients across Melbourne to help them ditch the doom and bring back calm.

Here’s a quick recap:

1. Stop the clutter before it starts.

Before you even touch your doom boxes, look at what’s coming into your home. Say no to things you don’t need, and stop the overflow at the source.

2. Make conscious choices.

Be intentional about what you allow to take up space in your life—physically and mentally. Block out regular decluttering time in your calendar—treat it like a real appointment you can’t miss.

3. Sort before you decide.

Don’t try to declutter and organise at the same time. First, sort items by category (cords, batteries, stationery), then come back to make decisions.

4. Create easy, permanent homes.

If an item doesn’t have a home, it becomes clutter. Use baskets, containers, and labels—but keep it simple! If it’s too complicated, it won’t last.

5. Build daily habits.

Unpack your bag when you walk in the door. Wash dishes straight after meals. Little habits prevent chaos from piling up.

6. Get accountability.

Whether it’s a friend, coach, or our 6-week “Get and Stay Focused” program, support makes all the difference.

Simple First Steps to Clear the Doom

Start small. You don’t need a full weekend to begin.

  • Schedule 30-minute “declutter sprints” in your calendar
  • Deal with things straight away (don’t drop and dash)
  • Sort your existing doom boxes by category—no decisions yet!
  • Start with easy wins: broken items, duplicates, things you forgot you had
  • Create a weekly routine to stay on top of it all

Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Progress, not perfection.

Living With Others? It’s Not Always Easy

A few attendees shared how tricky it can be to stay organised when others in the house aren’t on board. I hear this all the time. You might set up a great system, only for a family member to undo it 10 minutes later.

Start with what you can control. Your spaces, your habits. Lead by example—and gently encourage others along the way.
